Peru Wins Close Battle Against Cuba

COLIMA, Mexico, August 3, 2025 – Peru recovered from losing the first set to claim a hard-fought 3-2 victory (16-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11) over Cuba in the second match of the opening day of the XXII Women's Pan American Volleyball Cup on Sunday.

Sandra Ostos scored 18 points, including three aces, as the offensive star of the Peruvian team, followed by Karla Ortiz and Aixa Vigil with 15 and 14 points respectively.

Ivy May Vila led Cuba with 19 points, while their captain Dezirett Madan added 16.

Peru led in blocks 14-13, and Cuba held the advantage in attacks 61-54.

Antonio Rizola, Peru coach: “It was a match between two teams that are developing, preparing for the future. Cuba had a beautiful match, enduring the difficulties. We also went through many difficulties and are finding our team. I was very pleased, and a first victory in a championship like this is very important.”

Manuel Torres, Cuba coach: “It was a very close match. Today is the first day, and the girls haven't played together for a good few months, and we've barely had time to prepare. but little by little, we hope they'll find their way and get back into their rhythm.”
