Peru assures fifth place in retaliation versus Mexico

HAVANA, Cuba, March 22, 2015 – Peruvian team defeated Mexico 27-25, 24-26, 20-25, 25-23, and 15-12 and assured the fifth place of the III Girls’ U18 Volleyball Pan Am Cup which will be closed today at the Coliseum of the Sports City.

Two hours and 19 minutes lasted the fifth tie-breaker where both teams tallied 111 points. However, it resulted in the third victory by the South Americans with two losses one of them precisely against the Central Americans who finished with a 2-3 record of win-loss.

The top scorer was, the Peruvian, Leslie Leyva (21), escorted by her team-mates Nicole Abreu and Maricarmen Geuerrero (both with 14). On the rivals’ side, Kathya García (17), Karla Mirelis (16), Sirenia Gómez and Karina Flores (both with 12), and Alondra Amaro (10) got double digits.

“More than revenge we have achieved to win a match versus ourselves. We started very well and also at the beginning of the second set, but from then on we did not respect our identity and we stopped playing our game. We have to thank the contribution of the substitutes who were essential to come from behind and recover the initiative. They controlled the ball and had much defence when facing situations which made impossible a good attack”, explained, Spaniard, Juan Diego García, coach of Peru.

“It is good for the team as we want to increase the rivalry among the starting players and the substitutes to battle for the team membership to the U18 WCH as hard as possible”, sentenced.

The captain, Nicole, indicated that “we entered with everything we had for the revenge, but just in the sets where we were really close point by point we were not able to define. Thus, we missed two sets and it was when we focused on the victory.”

Cuban, Ricardo Naranjo, coach of Mexico, commented that “we have missed the fifth place, despite having played powerfully every set. However the fitness diminished as this team has had few days of work and it made us not to finish well at the final moments. Nevertheless it is a learning and we learn much more when we loss. The way to go through is beneficial and I do not leave happily, but satisfied with my team.”

Captain, Karina regretted she was overconfident as they had already won over Peru in Pool A (3-2). “We smashed, but we did not get to win. Now the coaches already know our defects and virtues. We must keep on preparing really well to have a better team and a good world championship.”
