Peru beats Cuba for second victory

LIMA, Peru, June 18, 2017 – Hosts Peru swept Cuba 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21) to register their second victory in Pool B of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Sunday.

Carla Rueda led three Peruvian players with double figures in the scores with 18 points, followed by Angela Leyva and Clarivett Yllescas with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Cuban Heidy Casanova led the losers with 11 points.

Peru held margins of 11-3 in the blocking category and 6-4 in service winners. Cuba was tops in attacks 40-39.

Mirtha Uribe, Captain of Peru: “The serve was our main weapon and we used it very well today. We have improved our blocking in the three weeks we have been under the new coach. The blocking is a work in progress but it is evolving well.”

Sulian Matienzo, Captain of Cuba: “We made too many errors and Peru played very well. We could not play our game and entered to the match a little nervous. Our mistakes were the big difference.”

Luizomar de Moura, Coach of Peru: “Our basic plan worked well and the players followed it. Our serve-blocking-defense relation was very good. I am very glad with the way things are going on in our team.”

Wilfredo Robinson, Coach of Cuba: “Peru showed a good serve well managed and a good tactical plan on defense. Yesterday against a taller team like Canada we played much better than today.”
