Peru beats Trinidad and Tobago to play for seventh place
Chiclayo, July 11, 2019. Peru, backed by hundreds of fans who
came to the Coliseo Cerrado in this city, won 3-0 (25-15, 25-10,
25-14) to Trinidad and Tobago, advancing to the game for the
seventh place of the XVIII Pan American Cup.
The host team will face Cuba, team that won in five disputed set
in the group stage in Trujillo.
Angela Leiva, with 18 points, for the best for Peru and Leslie
Leyva finished with 10, plus 9 for Captain Karla Ortiz. For
Trinidad and Tobago, Kiune Fletcher scored 9 and 8 for captain
Darlene Ramdin.
Peru dominated the attack 37-18, 6-4 blocking and serving 11-1,
committing 16 errors for 21 of their opponents.
The best scorer in Peru, Leiva said "we are happy with the win,
we came to get the result and we thank the people of Chiclayo
who came to support us. It took us a while to adapt to the game
of Trinidad and Tobago, but when we did we could make a better
game.
"
The captain of Peru, Leyda, said "it was a complicated game
because of the game of Trinidad, sometimes we could not keep our
rhythm and we fell to the rhythm of them. We know that we have
to correct some things that tomorrow before Cuba that will be
very complicated ".
Francisco Hervás, coach of Perú: "The truth is that it has not
been the match that I have left to much happy. It was a victory,
but I would have liked to find more intensity and keep it in our
field. Trinidad did his job, but we would have liked to be a
little more aggressive".
"The game against Cuba is very complicated, they are a team that
showed in the whole first phase and pressed everyone, playing
five sets with Argentina, Dominican... we know it will be a
difficult game and we will have to play better than today."
Cuba and Peru will play for seventh place in the Pan American
Cup at 8:00 p.m. after the game of Mexico and Trinidad and
Tobago at 6:00 p.m, which will define points 9-10 of the
tournament.
