LIMA, Peru, May 23, 2015 – Peru defeated Dominican Republic 3-0
(25-22, 25-12, 25-17) in the last match of the preliminary round
at the U20 Women’s Volleyball Copa Latina on Saturday.
In the match that lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes in front of a big
crowd at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum, Peru led in attacks (37-29),
blocks (7-5) and aces (6-3). The winners committed 14 unforced
errors to 25 by the losers.
The two teams, qualified to the FIVB U20 Women’s World
Championship to be held in Puerto Rico next September, will face
again on Sunday for the title.
Angela Leyva and Maguilaura Frias each had 13 points for Peru
while Natalia Martinez and Massiel Matos finished with 11 apiece
for the Dominican Republic side.
Leyva thanked the Peruvian fans for the big support saying “it
was nice to have the support of the crowd and we hope they come
back tomorrow to watch us giving Peru new joy.”
Coach Natalia Malaga expressed her satisfaction for the way her
team performed against the Dominicans.
“Today everything resulted the way we planned,” Malaga said.
“There are a few things with to work with but step by step we
are getting closer to be more solid in the attack and
controlling the nerves.”
In the other match of Saturday, Brazil notched its first win by
defeating Cuba in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-9). The
two teams will play for the bronze medal on Sunday. |
