Peru subdues Trinidad & Tobago with lopsided record

LIMA, Peru, September 20, 2016 - Hosts Peru swept Trinidad & Tobago 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-7) in the last match of day two on Tuesday at the U23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup whose preliminary round takes place at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Miraflores, Lima.

It was the most lopsided match (75-24) in the history of the tournament where Peru dominated in all facets of the game. It broke the old record of 75-26 set by Peru against Costa Rica on September 3, 2012. Peru blanked their opponents 4-0 in aces and 11-0 in blocks.

The winners had four players who scored on double digits led by Maguilaura Frias with 14 points, including five aces. Katherine Regalado and Angela Leyva contributed 13 points each and Coraima Gomez added 11 in the victory.

Mauro Marasciulo, coach of Peru: “It is important to have a quiet match and avoid the draining of the team. Tomorrow we have an important match against Argentina, a team much more prepared and stronger than the one that took part in the South American, but we are confident about our work and the commitment of the team with their country.”

Maguilaura Frias, player of Peru: “We faced a team that was not strong but who battled and enjoyed together until the last point. Tomorrow we go against an opponent that we know well but we won’t go out over confident but focused on not giving breaks to the rival and get the victory.”

Nicholson Drakes, coach of Trinidad & Tobago: “Peru is a great team and we knew the result would be similar to that of today but I am glad about the progress of the girls. We are a team going through a building up process and we are developing what we want.”

Malika Davidson, captain of Trinidad & Tobago: “We have not been playing together for a long period and I am somehow disappointed because we have not played with all our potential but we are improving. Our goal is to gain experience as a team, enjoy and try to qualify to the semifinals.”
