Peruvian Leyva sets new scoring record for U23 Cup

LIMA, Peru, September 22, 2016 – Peruvian prolific scorer Angela Leyva established a new record of most points in a single match at the U23 Women’s Pan American Cup with the 35 she marked in the five-set victory over Argentina on Wednesday at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Miraflores.

Leyva shattered the previous mark of 33 points registered by Colombian Diana Arrechea in a loss to Argentina on September 5, 2012 during the first edition of the competition also in Lima, Peru.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Roosevelt Comarazamy, Communications Director of NORCECA Confederation.

Leyva became the fourth player (five times) to reach the 30-point plateau in the history of the tournament joining Arrechea, Argentinean Lucia Fresco (32, in the same match as Arrechea), and Cuban Melissa Vargas who had 31 against Peru on September 13, 2014 and 30 against Dominican Republic on September 12, 2012.

Reaching the 30-point mark is nothing new for Leyva, who turns 20 next November, as she is the only player in the history of the Women’s Senior Pan American Cup to score twice 30 or more points in a single match.

This year at the XV Pan American Cup held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, she had 32 against Trinidad & Tobago (July 5) and 31 against Venezuela (July 8).

In the same match of Wednesday, the Argetinean Candelaria Herrera registered 9 blocks to tie the record set by Dominican Gaila Gonzalez on September 9, 2014 against Cuba.
