Plataneros Spoil the Party in Naranjito and Caribes Remain Undefeated

Naranjito, Puerto Rico – October 31, 2025 – Friday night’s action in the Men’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSM) saw victories for the Plataneros de Corozal and the two-time defending champions, the Caribes de San Sebastián.

The Plataneros dominated in straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) over the Changos de Naranjito at the legendary Gelito Ortega Court, spoiling their home opener. Meanwhile, the Caribes battled through a five-set thriller to defeat the Gigantes de Carolina at the Luis Aymat Cardona Coliseum.

In the opening set, the visiting team took a 21-18 lead thanks to a block by Julio Mercedes on Sebastián Negrón and widened the gap to 23-18 with two strong attacks from Spencer Olivier from position four.

Corozal reached set point at 24-18 following an attack error by Colton Cowell and sealed the set 25-19 with another Olivier spike from position four.

In the second set, Naranjito struggled with reception midway through the frame, allowing Corozal to take a 20-16 lead. A block by Olivier on Negrón secured a 23-17 advantage. Guillermo Moya scored through the middle to earn set point at 24-18, and the Plataneros closed the set 25-20 after a Changos service error.

The Plataneros maintained their rhythm in the third set but had to withstand a late surge from Naranjito, who rallied with a 4-0 run to go up 23-22.

Penrose tied the score at 23, and an illegal back-row attack by Cowell gave Corozal set point, prompting a Changos timeout.

After the break, Clarke Goldball committed an attack error from position two, giving Corozal the victory.

Corozal outperformed Naranjito 39-33 in attacks, 9-7 in blocks, 43-40 in digs, and 22-21 in assists. The Changos led in aces (3-1) and receptions (42-35).

On offense, Spencer Olivier and Jalen Penrose stood out for the Plataneros with 16 and 11 points, respectively. For the Changos, Colton Cowell, Clarke Goldball, and Ángel Rivera each contributed 10 points.

Corozal collected all three available points, improving to a 2-2 record with six points, tying the Gigantes de Carolina for third place in the standings.
Meanwhile, the Changos fell to 1-3 with four points, sitting in seventh place.

Caribes Stay Unbeaten

The Caribes de San Sebastián defended their home court at the Luis Aymat Cardona Coliseum with a 3-2 victory (25-19, 25-16, 19-25, 21-25, 15-8) over the Gigantes de Carolina.

With the win, the Caribes not only added two points but also preserved their perfect 4-0 record, now totaling 11 points. Carolina earned one point in the loss and sits at 2-2 with six points, tied for third place with Corozal.

Pelegrín Vargas led the Caribes’ offense with 28 points—22 attacks, 2 blocks, and 4 aces. He was followed by Corey Chavers with 13 points and Ezequiel Cruz with 10.
