Plataneros de Corozal and Gigantes de Adjuntas
Split Five-Set Battle
BARRANQUITAS, Puerto Rico, November 2, 2025. – Closing the second
week of action in the Men’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSM), the
Plataneros de Corozal and the Gigantes de Adjuntas delivered an
exciting five-set showdown at the Juan C. Berríos court, with
Corozal coming out on top.
The
Plataneros claimed a 3-2 victory (25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 25-21,
15-10), earning two points to climb into third place in the
standings with a 3-2 record and 8 overall points. Despite the loss,
Adjuntas earned one point, now standing at 0-5 with 2 points,
remaining at the bottom of the standings.
With
the match tied at one set apiece, the Gigantes, led by William
Rivera attacking from zone two, took an 18-15 lead and maintained
control to go up 2-1. Adjuntas reached set point at 24-19 with a
quick middle attack by Heriberto Maldonado, closing the frame after
a service error from Ramón Matos.
Corozal forced the decider by pulling ahead 22-18 in the fourth set
with a block on Encarnación. They reached set point at 24-20 after a
Maldonado service error and sealed the frame following another miss
from the service line, this time by William Rivera.
The
Plataneros came out strong in the fifth set, taking a 5-1 lead,
including a block on Rivera, which proved decisive. Corozal reached
match point with a comfortable 14-7 advantage after an effective
spike from Spencer Olivier from zone four and sealed the match 15-10
thanks to a service error by Roberto Pérez.
Corozal’s offensive leaders were Jalen Penrose with 30 points and
Spencer Olivier with 22. For Adjuntas, Mark Olsen scored 16, while
Cristian Encarnación and William Rivera each contributed 15, and
both Heriberto Maldonado and Roberto Pérez finished with 10 apiece.
In
team stats, Corozal led in blocks (13-10), aces (6-5), and assists
(32-28).
Adjuntas outperformed the Plataneros in attacks (57-52), digs
(44-42), and receptions (52-49). |
