President Medina visits Dominican compatriots in Italy
Rome, Italy, September 28, 2014 – Sunday was a very special day
for the Dominican Republic team taking part in the FIVB Women’s
Volleyball World Championship.
Not only they scored their third five-set victory of the first
round by outdueling hosts Italy to finish with an undefeated
win-loss record in five outings but also received the visit of
an illustrious compatriot.
Danilo Medina, President of the Dominican Republic paid a visit
to the players at their hotel in Rome following their fifth
victory in the competition.
Medina is in Italy to attend the opening session of the United
Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) meetings at the
Italian capital.
“You are doing what was never done before,” Medina said echoing
the motto of his presidential campaign two years ago. “You have
been able to defeat stronger opponents.”
The players were caught by surprise with the visit of President
Medina who encouraged the athletes to continue battling focused
and giving their best to win the women’s volleyball world
championship.
President Medina also took opportunity to congratulate Cristobal
Marte Hoffiz, president of the women’s national teams program
with a warm hug for his dedication and laudable work.
The Dominicans kicked off the first round with a 3-2 victory
over Germany followed by a 3-0 win over Tunisia. They continued
prevailing 3-2 against Croatia before subduing Argentina 3-1. On
Sunday won 3-2 over Italy.
Medina posed for a “selfie”
photo with all the players and part of the technical staff and
the athletes presented him an autographed banner of the team.
The Dominican Republic’s president had the chance to chat with
the players for several minutes saying finally their compatriots
are very proud for all the goals they have accomplished during
the past decade. |
