Puerto Rico Outlasts Dominican Republic

in Five-Set Men’s Final Four Thriller

LEÓN, Guanajuato, Mexico, June 12, 2026. – Defending two-time champion Puerto Rico overcame a determined comeback by Dominican Republic to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 15-11) in the opening match of the 2026 NORCECA Men’s Final Four at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

The three-day tournament brings together host Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Guatemala, with valuable continental and world ranking points on the line as the teams begin their international season.

Puerto Rico appeared to be in control after taking the first two sets. In the opener, the defending champions built a comfortable 20-15 advantage behind Antonio Feliciano and Jair Santiago. Dominican Republic fought to stay within striking distance through the efforts of Moisés Ortiz and Adrián Figueroa, but Puerto Rico capitalized on its opportunities and Feliciano closed the set with a decisive attack.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Dominican Republic raced to an early 6-3 lead with the offense of Héctor Cruz and Wilfrido Hernández, but Puerto Rico quickly regained its rhythm. Santiago and Feliciano led the comeback, while Klistan Lawrence’s serving helped the Puerto Ricans pull away and move within one set of victory.

Dominican Republic refused to surrender and gradually shifted the momentum. The third set was closely contested, with both teams exchanging leads until Luther Rosario scored the decisive point to keep his side alive.

The Dominicans carried that energy into the fourth set, where Cruz and Ortiz spearheaded the attack. Rosario earned set point with a powerful kill, and after a service error by Puerto Rico, the match was extended to a decisive fifth set.

The tiebreak lived up to the intensity of the contest. Puerto Rico gained a crucial 9-6 advantage with timely attacks from Feliciano and Santiago and maintained its composure during the closing stages. With the Dominican Republic pressing for another comeback, Klistan Lawrence delivered the final kill to seal the hard-fought victory.

Dominican Republic outscored Puerto Rico in attacks (59-54) and blocks (11-8), but Puerto Rico's serving made the difference with a decisive 9-1 advantage in aces. The teams were nearly even in errors, with Puerto Rico committing 33 and Dominican Republic 35.

Opposite hitter Jair Santiago led Puerto Rico’s balanced offense with 18 points. Outside hitters Antonio Feliciano and Klistan Lawrence added 17 and 16 points, respectively, while middle blocker Ismael Alomar contributed 11 points.

Dominican Republic was paced by outside hitter Héctor Cruz, who led all scorers with an impressive 28 points, all on attacks. Middle blocker Luther Rosario finished with 12 points, including a match-high five blocks, while Moisés Ortiz added 10 points.

On the second day of competition, Puerto Rico will meet Guatemala, while Dominican Republic will face host Mexico as the battle for the Men’s Final Four title continues.

Puerto Rico team captain Amel Cabrera said after the five-set victory: “We're used to battling Dominican Republic in five-set matches, so we came prepared for a tough, physical and long contest. We started with far fewer service errors during the first two sets, but then our serving dropped off a bit and they took advantage of it, which also lifted them emotionally. In volleyball, anything can happen”.

Dominican Republic libero Miguel Mieses said: “The season is just beginning. We knew it would be a close match because these are two teams that know each other very well. I recognize Puerto Rico's effort; they came out playing really hard. The great thing about volleyball is that every set starts at zero, and that's how we kept pushing to extend the match. I have a lot of confidence in my team, and we will continue to grow as the tournament progresses.
