GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 19, 2013. – Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock of Puerto Rico-A and Lombardo Ontiveros with Juan Virgen of Mexico each scored two victories in opening day at the Gatorade-Guatemala Beach Volleyball Tournament on Friday.

In Pool A, Puerto Ricans Rodriguez/Haddock first defeated Wheelan/Plantinga of Canada-B 21-18, 21-16 and then prevailed over Dykstra/McGuire of United States-B after losing the first set 18-21, 21-17 and 15-6.

Rodriguez took the gold in Guatemala last year with Pablo Guzman.

With easy wins, Ontiveros/Virgen in Pool C subdued Bushe/Deonath of Trinidad-B by 21-10, 21-9 and then dispatched Recinos/Reyes of Guatemala-B by 21-8, 21-11.

Leonardo/Garrido of Guatemala-A in Pool A also claimed two victories over Dykstra/McGuire 21-18, 21-17 and against Wheelan/Plantinga by 21-14, 21-19.

In Pool D Cubans Piña/Gonzalez joined the winners with victories against Escobar/Vargas of El Salvador-A 21-14, 21-18 and O’Gorman/Pedlow of Canada-A 25-23, 21-14.

The preliminary round continues on Saturday.
