SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, January 14, 2016 – Mexico and
Puerto Rico have submitted bids for the hosting of the FIVB
Men’s and Women’s Intercontinental Olympic Qualification
Tournaments in May.
The four-team tournaments will grant the last tickets in both
genders to the volleyball competition at the Rio de Janeiro
Olympic Games.
Jesus Perales and Nelson Perez, presidents of the Mexican and
Puerto Rican National Federations, respectively, made their
proposals during the second day of the NORCECA Sport
Organization Commission meetings in Santo Domingo.
Both received the approval of NORCECA President Cristobal Marte
Hoffiz, who will present it to FIVB Sports Events Department
next week.
Mexico intends to organize the men’s four-team tournament in the
city of Monterrey from June 2 to 4 while Puerto Rico would host
the women’s event in San Juan from May 19 to 21.
Mexico finished third at the NORCECA Men’s Olympic Qualifier won
by Cuba in Edmonton, Canada last week. They are going to play
against Chile, the third placed team at the South American
tournament and Tunisia and Algeria, the second and third placed
teams at the African tournament.
Puerto Rico was the third place finisher at the NORCECA Women’s
Olympic Qualifier in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA won by the home
team, and will play Colombia, the second place team of South
America and the second and third place team of the African
tournament to be played next month in Cameroon. |
