Puerto Rico crushes St Lucia for second victory
PONCE, Puerto Rico, May 23, 2014 – Puerto Rico needed less than
60 minutes to score their second victory in the NORCECA Women’s
World Championship Qualification Tournament Pool R by brushing
aside St Lucia 25-4, 25-9, 25-10 on Friday.
The victory earned the home side a spot in the decisive match
for the berth in the final stage of the world championship in
Italy.
Puerto Rico dominated the game from start to finish and coach
Jose Mieles had the chance to rotate his players.
Vanessa Velez led Puerto Rico for second day in a row with 17
points while Lynda Morales and Sheila Ocasio contributed 8 and 7
points, respectively.
“The game allowed me to give playing opportunities to the new
generation of players and to work with the three setters in our
squad,” Mieles said. “It was a good result but we still need to
improve in some details.”
“The match served to get the glue and put everything together,”
Puerto Rican Yarimar Rosa said. “It is only the second match of
the season and we still need to improve in some areas.”
