Puerto Rico gains momentum in Pool A with win over Nicaragua

LEÓN, Mexico, September 14, 2026.- Puerto Rico extended its perfect run at the 2026 Women’s Pan American Cup with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-9) victory over Nicaragua on Monday at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

Puerto Rico improved to 3-0 in Pool A and will enter its final preliminary-round match undefeated when it faces the Dominican Republic on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m., with first place in the pool and a direct berth to the semifinals on the line.

Nicaragua dropped to 1-2 and will close pool play against Canada at 6:00 p.m.

Puerto Rico imposed its rhythm mainly from the service line and increased its control as the match progressed. Nicaragua stayed within reach for much of the first set, but Puerto Rico pulled away late to take it 25-17.

From there, Puerto Rico took firmer control. It dominated the second set 25-11 and opened the third with a 7-0 lead, setting the tone for a 25-9 finish and the straight-set victory.

Puerto Rico held a huge advantage in kills 37-18, blocks 9-2 and aces 8-2. Nicaragua committed 21 unforced errors compared to 15 by Puerto Rico.

Ivania Ortiz once again led Puerto Rico with 12 points, including seven attacks, one block and four aces. Neira Ortiz added 10 points on seven attacks, two blocks and one ace. Brittany Forbes led Nicaragua with eight points.

Puerto Rico outside hitter Valeria Vázquez highlighted the pressure her team has been able to generate from the service line.

“Our serving has been good. Just like in the match against Canada, we emphasized the importance of serving. From the service line we have been able to apply pressure, and today we made things difficult for Nicaragua in serve reception. For our final pool-play match against the Dominican Republic, we hope to do the same,” Vázquez said.

Nicaragua libero María Roa said the team continues to show progress as the tournament moves forward.

“It was not an easy match. I think we have improved with every match and gained more confidence. We did better in this match than against the Dominican Republic. We are preparing for the AFECAVOL Final Four, looking for better coordination, better teamwork and a stronger performance. It is all about improving,” Roa said.
