Puerto Rico still alive in men’s qualifier
VANCOUVER, Canada, January 11, 2020 - Puerto Rico kept their
tournament alive by defeating Mexico three sets to zero
(26-24, 25-23, 25-23) at the NORCECA Men's Tokyo
Qualification Tournament in Vancouver, Canada.
Maurice Torres and Pablo Guzman led Puerto Rico with 18 and
16 points with Pelegrin Vargas contributing 13 points in the
victory. Daniel Vargas and Miguel Chávez each had 8 points
as the best Mexicans.
Maurice Torres, Puerto Rican player: "We’re pleased because
we knew we had to win the match. We still have a chance
depending on what happens. We came into the game knowing
this is a must win going into tomorrow’s game against
Canada. Credit to my teammates for battling and fighting
against a tough Mexico team."
Oswald Antonetti, Puerto Rican coach: "Yesterday was tough
because we didn’t play any exhibition games so it was
tougher for us to get into a rhythm. As much as you can
train, the match experience is different so today we had the
experience from yesterday and played much better. We need to
get the right game plan tomorrow against Canada and compete
hard."
