Puerto Rico seek their four gold in a row at CACG

 

CORDOBA, Mexico, November 23, 2014 - Puerto Rico will look to conquer their fourth gold medal in a row, as the Men’s Competition of the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games begins on Tuesday.

 

After winning the regional title in Mayaguez four years ago, the Puerto Ricans seek also their fifth gold overall, considering that their first medal was won in 1938. Since 2002 the Caribbean squad have finished atop on the podium.

 

They also have an historical record of four silver medals and three bronzes for a total of 11 podiums. “It’s a great responsibility, and every time gets more difficult, but we are well prepared to reach the podium,” head coach, David Aleman, said.

 

The most winning team in the history of Men’s Volleyball at the Central American and Caribbean Games are the Cubans, with 10 gold medals, including nine in arrow from 1966 to 1998. They also have two silver medals and three bronzes for a total of 15 podiums.

 

Mexico is the only other country to ever win a gold medal with six. The Mexicans also have six silvers and five bronzes for a total of 17 podiums.

 

Venezuela, Dominican Republic and El Salvador are among the rest of the teams with at least one appearance on the podium at Central American and Caribbean Games. Venezuela has reached it 12 times, with six silvers and 6 bronzes.

 

Dominican Republic has won four medals, two of them silver and two of them bronze, while El Salvador has won only one bronze at the first edition celebrated in 1930.
