Puerto Rico to host World Grand Prix Pool K
CAROLINA, Puerto Rico, July 22, 2014 – Argentina, Cuba,
Netherlands and hosts Puerto Rico will compete in Pool K of the
FIVB World Grand Prix as the premier women’s volleyball annual
competition visits “The Charmed Island” from July 25-27 at
Guillermo Angulo Coliseum of Carolina.
These four squads form part of the 8-team second group of
countries participating in Pools J to O under the new format of
28 teams created by FIVB to promote both elite competition as
well as development opportunities.
The other four teams of the group - Canada, Belgium, Poland and
hosts Peru - are set to compete during the same dates at Eduardo
Dibos Coliseum of Lima, the Peruvian capital.
It will Argentina’s fourth time in the competition and the third
appearance for Puerto Rico. The Netherlands have participated in
10 occasions, winning the crown in 2007 after finishing fourth
in 2003.
Cuba has taken part in all but two of the 21 editions of the
event. Its tally includes two titles (1993 and 2000), four
silver medals and three third places.
Canada’s only appearance at the scene of the World Grand Prix
was in 2003 while Belgium will be making its debut. Peru
participated twice before (1994 and 2011) while Poland has a
streak of 10 consecutive years of presence going into 2014.
In the eight-team third group, also called the development
group, Mexico will host Algeria, Bulgaria and Kenya in Pool Q at
Mexico City, while in Pool P, Kazakhstan will host Croatia,
Czech Republic and Australia in Almaty.
The elite group of 12 teams will start competing on August 1.
Those teams are:
Brazil, USA, Japan, China, Russia, Italy, Serbia, the Dominican
Republic, Germany, Korea, Turkey and Thailand.
