CALLAO, Peru, June 20, 2015 - Puerto Rico will play Canada for
fifth place at the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup
following their 3-1 (19-25, 25-9, 25-21, 25-21) victory over
Brazil at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao on Saturday.
After losing the first set the Puerto Ricans got their energy
back and dominated the rest of the way leading in attacks 56-39,
blocks 15-12 and aces 5-0.
Stephanie Enright was the best offensive player for the winners
with 17 points, including four blocks and one ace. Yarimar Rosa
and Shirley Ferrer contributed 16 and 15 in the victory while
Alexandra Oquendo and Sheila Ocasio concluded with 12 and 10,
respectively.
Lorenne Geraldo and Karoline Tomena were the only Brazilians who
finished in double digits in the scores with 13 and 12.
Yarimar Rosa, captain of Puerto Rico: “We are happy about this
victory after two consecutive losses in five sets to Argentina
and Cuba. We wanted to be on the podium but we had to recover
and come back after so painful loss. Today we played a good game
and gave chances to the younger players so they can adjust
better.”
Lana Conceicao, captain of Brazil: “Unfortunately tonight we
were not able to control the experience and strength of the
Puerto Rican attackers. Tomorrow we will play our last match of
the competition. Each match helps us in our preparation for the
world championship in Puerto Rico.”
Jose Mieles, coach of Puerto Rico: “After a loss like the one
yesterday, our team was able to recover and came out with
everything. After losing the first set we solved the situation
with character and maturity. Tomorrow we will go out looking for
the win right away.”
Mauricio Thomas, coach of Brazil: “Puerto Rico is an experienced
team that plays at a pace that is over our level. We are getting
experience for our objective this year.” |
