CAROLINA, Puerto Rico, July 4, 2015 - Puerto Rico beat Poland
3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18) in Group 2 of the 2015 FIVB
World Grand Prix to sit atop of Pool K as the only undefeated
team in the Pool.
With the support of more than
2,500 local fans, Puerto Rico controlled the fundamentals of the
game and were resilient in recovering after Poland won the
second set 25-21 to level the match at 1-1.
Puerto Rico’s Karina Ocasio
scored a game-high 24 points, while Stephanie Enright
contributed 17 points for the home side. Anna Grejman scored a
team-high 15 for Poland.
Canada earned its first win by outplaying Bulgaria 3-2 (18-25,
25-14, 25-14, 20-25, 15-13) in Pool K action Saturday night.
It was a battle, but in the tie-breaking fifth set, Tabitha Love
led Canada to a 15-13 win and finished the contest with a
game-high 24 points. Eva Yaneva scored 22 points for Bulgaria.
Canada's Shanice Marcelle and
Bulgaria's Mira Todorova were impressive in defense - both
scoring six points from blocks. Canada earned 18 points from
blocks; and Bulgaria 14.
In Group 3, Mexico picked up their first win in Pool Q as they
edged Algeria 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-13) in Cheraga,
Algeria on Saturday.
Great defence was the key to Mexico’s win with superior blocking
(17-7). They had the edge in aces (8-7) but Algeria were helped
by Mexico’s 34 errors, 10 more than the hosts.
Mexico were led by Dulce Carranza with 28 points and Andrea
Rangel with 22. Algeria’s top scorer was Safia Boukhima with 21
points.
Also in Group 3, hosts Peru beat Cuba 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20)
on Saturday, swiftly putting behind them their first loss of the
2015 World Grand Prix the previous night against Colombia in
Trujillo.
The two highest individual scorers in Group 3 were at it again,
with Cuba's Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu top-scoring with 19 and
Angela Leyva leading Peru with 16
as Peru won their fourth match from five 2015 World Grand Prix
appearances. |
