Puerto Rico unstoppable against Trinidad and Tobago
CHICLAYO, Peru, July 8, 2019 - Puerto Rico crushed Trinidad and
Tobago 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-13), reaching two wins without
losses in Group B of the Women's Pan American Cup, in his third
day.
Pilar Victoria with 11 points led Puerto Rico and setter
Wilmarie Rivera scored 9, eight by serves. Trinidad and Tobago
was limited to 3 points each from Sheri Thackoorcharan and Afiya
Alexander.
The blockade of Trinidad and Tobago was better 7-3, but Puerto
Rico was relentless with 39 points per attack by 7 of its
opponents, and surpassed 15-3 in service, equaling 18 errors
each.
The sisters Pilar and Sofía Victoria, aged 24 and 17
respectively, debuted and played together for the first time in
an official tournament. "I am very excited and happy. It's the
first time we are together on the court, for me it means a lot
this experience, "said Sofia.
"It's very nice to have my sister playing with me, being
together on the court, since last year in a NORCECA tournament
we were on the team but we did not play at the same time," said
Pilar.
The captain of Puerto Rico, Natalia Valentín, said "we are a
very united team, anyone who is on the court plays for our
country and the support will be of all. Today we take the
opportunity to give our reserves a little bit of space because a
champion team needs all the players not only six, because it is
not easy to leave the bank to play, it is good that they are
gaining confidence ".
José Mieles, coach of Puerto Rico: "I'm happy with the result,
it's the second match of the tournament, I started with the
starting line up to keep up the pace, but then I used the other
players to give them time to play, so they can have experience
at this level and I am satisfied with the replacement."
Trinidad and Tobago will face Colombia (which had rest) at 4:00
p.m. while Mexico and Puerto Rico will play at 6:00 p.m. in the
Cerrado Coliseum of Chiclayo.
