Puerto Rico won a tight victory over Canada and advanced to the
semifinals
TRUJILLO, Peru, July 12, 2019.
With a lot of heart and perseverance, the Puerto Rican team
built their victory over Canada 3-1 with score (30-28, 13-25,
27-25, 26-24) and with this result it obtained its
classification to the semifinal of the XVIII edition of the
Pan-American Senior Women's Cup.
Canada had the top scorers of the game, Lea Gray and Kiera Van
Ryk with 24 and 20 points respectively. But the Puerto Ricans
would rise with the victory, led in the offensive by Paulina
Prieto with 16 points, Stephanie Enright 15 and Aurea Cruz 12.
Puerto Rico was overtaken by the Canadians in attack (49-54) and
blocking (7-10), but took a slight advantage in their favor in
service (10-9).
Paulina Prieto, opposite of Puerto Rico: Canada made us a very
good match. It was not easy to recover from the second set, they
managed to make us lose many points; But the key was to keep
fighting, be patient and not despair because we could make more
mistakes.
Lea Gray, attacker tip of Canada: We are very disappointed. What
we showed in the second set, is the level of volleyball in
Canada. I'm proud of how we played that set, but we could not
repeat it in the following sets. We will talk as a team why we
could not close the first and fourth set, when we had the
advantage in the score. It is something that we must study so
that it does not happen again in the future.
Puerto Rico joins the already classified United States and
Dominican Republic, the fourth classified will be defined from
the duel of the second quarterfinal duel between Argentina and
Colombia. The winner of this last match will advance to the
semifinals of the Pan American Cup scheduled for Saturday, July
13 at the Gran Chimú Coliseum in Trujillo. |
