Qualifying Beach Events in Cuba and Costa Rica

HAVANA, Cuba, February 7, 2018 – The NORCECA Qualification Beach Volleyball Tournaments to the Youth Olympic Games will take place in Cuba and Costa Rica next May.

The event in Cuba will be played at the National School of Volleyball, located at the Cuban capital from May 25 to 28, said Ariel Sainz, president of the Cuban Volleyball Federation.

“Female and male teams from the NORCECA Central Zone – United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba- will be competing with pairs born between 2000 and 2003”, he said.

Sainz added that Cuban players are preparing for this event where the winning pair per gender will be granted of a ticket to the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Argentina from October 6 to 18, with the competition program including 11 other disciplines but not indoor volleyball.

The youth players with aspirations to be included in the Cuban duos are participating now and until February 11 of the first phase of the national circuit of beach volleyball in Varadero. They also will do the same for the other leg next March in Ciego de Avila.

They also will have another option to gauge their state of preparation –if the chances arise- by participating in the Varadero’s leg of the NORCECA Circuit to be held this time from May 2 to 6.

Sainz admitted that the local players will have opponents of high level in the sport and winning the competition will not be an easy task while they try to go as far a possible.

Meanwhile, the other qualification tournament is scheduled to be played in Costa Rica from March 8 to 12 where together with the hosts will be competing the representatives of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Belize.
