“Queens of the Caribbean” invited to join UN Campaign
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, December 26, 2017 – The
Women’s National Volleyball Team of the Dominican Republic has
received an invitation to join the campaign #Para2030, an
initiative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The “Queens of the Caribbean” are invited to participate in the
recording of a video while mentioning in a brief message
associated to one of the 17 Objectives of Sustainable
Development in the Caribbean nation what the country needs to
eliminate poverty.
According to the 2016 Regional Report of Human Development in
Latin America, the rate of poverty in the Dominican Republic
sits around 30.5% with almost 1 million people in the strip of
vulnerability and under risk of a relapse for different causes.
In a letter to NORCECA President Cristobal Marte Hoffiz from
Lorenzo Jiménez, the resident representative of the UNDP, he
states that “in the face of this reality it becomes more urgent
to convene all the actors from all sectors of the society to
join their voices to eradicate the poverty in Dominican
Republic.”
Mr. Jimenez adds that “the Agenda 2030 and the OSD represent an
important challenge that will require ambitious and innovative
answers from the Dominican society.”
“We hope to count with the voices of the Queens of the Caribbean
to call the attention about the importance of this commitment
and thus contributing together to eliminate poverty in the
Dominican Republic,” he concludes. |
