Queens of the Caribbean parade around Santo Domingo
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 17, 2019 – The Queens
of the Caribbean, as the people in the Dominican Republic have
designated their women’s volleyball team, led the parade of
victory organized by the Olympic Committee and the Ministry of
Sports.
All the athletes that won a medal at the recently finished Lima
2019 Pan American Games paraded throughout the streets of Santo
Domingo being cheered by the fans who came out of their houses
to salute the local idols.
The leading wagon of the caravan was occupied by the members of
the volleyball team accompanied by Luis Mejia Oviedo, president
of the DR Olympic Committee and Danilo Díaz, minister of Sports
and Recreation who were joined by Cristobal Marte Hoffiz,
president of the female volleyball program of the Dominican
Federation.
The parade started at the Olympic Center in the center of the
Dominican capital and finished at the seaside George Washington
Avenue where several orchestras and bands played local tunes at
Plaza Eugenio María de Hostos.
The Dominican Republic won 40 medals at the Pan American Games,
including ten golds. The volleyball team won its five matches in
the tournament including the decisive contest for the title
against Colombia.
It was the second gold medal for the Dominican Republic Women’s
team with the previous one attained in 2003 when the Pan Am
Games were held in Santo Domingo. |
