Raul Vilchez, former Cuban star, passed away

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, January 13, 2022 - Raul Vilchez, the former Cuban middle blocker known as “La Muralla” for his blocking ability at the net has died in Colombia after a battle with cancer. He was 67.

The news about Vilchez's death were offered by the former player Mireya Luis, who pointed out that he had been battling with the disease for the last few months.

Vilchez had been living in Colombia for the past 23 years where he was a volleyball instructor and coach at several levels.

The slender Vilchez was the captain of the Cuban team that won the bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, a squad that included star players like Leonel Marshall, Diego Lapera, Jorge Perez Vento among others.

He also took part at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and participated in four world championships, two world cups, six Pan American Games and six Central American and Caribbean Games.
