Canada’s Redmann, Hatch reign supreme at Maracas Bay
MARACAS BAY, Trinidad, December 1, 2013 - Christian Redmann and
Maverick Hatch (CAN-B) closed out the 11th and final
leg of the 2013 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour in style by
claiming the title over William Montgomery and James Drost
(USA-B) in straight sets.
In a very entertaining final on a wet and cold night, Redmann
and Hatch heated up the atmosphere a bit with some scintillating
play for a 21-16, 21-16 victory.
Commenting on the win, their first for the season and also the
first for any Canadian men’s team Hatch, the standout player of
the match said it was a very intense match.
“The USA had a very strong team and even beat their first team
in the earlier round and we knew we had to be on our top game
and be ready to play and we came through,” Hatch said.
In the semifinals, Redmann and Hatch halted Lombardo Ontiveros
and Juan Virgen (MEX) from extending their record breaking tour
gold medal haul of six with a 21-17, 10-21, 15-12 win while
Montgomery and Drost (USA-B), who were fourth in Costa Rica a
week ago outlasted Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton (CAN-A),
also in three sets, 21-19, 16-21, 15-6.
In the match for the bronze medal, Schalk/Saxton edged Ontiveros/Virgen
in three sets 21-19, 17-21, 15-12.
However, Ontiveros and Virgen were still crowned the overall
tour winners for the year having won six of the legs a new
record.
