Russia edged Dominican Republic in five sets

RIMINI, Italy, June 6, 2021 – Russia relied on the offense of a powerful trio to defeat Dominican Republic in a seesaw five-set battle at the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League on Sunday.

Nataliya Goncharova scored 31 points and Arina Fedorovtseva and Irina Voronkova contributed 20 and 19 points, respectively, in the 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-8) victory of Russia.

Brayelin Martinez led Dominican Republic with 22 points, followed by Annerys Vargas and Yonkaira Peña with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jineiry Martínez and Bethania de la Cruz each had 9 points.

The Russians led in attacks 74-61 while the two teams were very similar in the rest of the scoring categories. Both teams scored via 9 blocks and Russia committed 23 errors to 24 by the Dominicans. The losers led in aces 3-1.
