MONTREUX, Switzerland, May 27, 2015 - A fresh Russia, at its
first game of the Montreux Volley masters, beat the Dominican
Republic, now 0-2, in three straight sets (23-25, 21-25, 23-25).
Since the warm-up, the two teams shot cannon balls on the floor
of the Pierrier Sports Hall, providing to the audience an
awesome spectacle on all the fronts of the game.
But powerful hitting was not the only dazzling part as liberos
dug incredible balls, hustling all over the court. A great
performance from both teams, that some of the Dominican fans
would say it finished too early.
Noteworthy were the performances of Dominican libero Brenda
Castillo who did magic in defense, and Russian setter Anna
Matienko, who, with her experiences and composure, led her team
to the win.
Anastasia Bavykina led Russia with 12 points, followed by Irina
Zaryazhko and Irina Voronkova with 10 apiece. Gina Mambru picked
up a match-high 15 points for the Dominican Republic while
Candida Arias and Yonkaira Peña had 11 and 10, respectively.
In the other matches, Turkey overcame Germany 3-1 (17-25,
25-22, 25-16, 25-14) and The Netherlands defeated China 3-0
(25-18, 26-24, 29-27). |
