ST. Maarten marches to the finals

Phillipsburg, Sint Maarten Saturday 7th August 2016:  St. Maarten continued their march to the finals as they defeated the British Virgin Islands with a score of 25-19; 25- 17; 23 – 25; 25 – 10.  Middle blocker Keishan Huggins was the lead scorer, contributing thirteen (13) points overall. Her team mates provided the necessary support to help seal St. Maarten’s win.

The British Virgin Islands, gave a good account of themselves, as they took set three (3), stunning their opponents.  They fought hard to remain in contention but they lacked the fire power to do so.  Sabina Clement and Javlyn Frett were the main offense contributors and emotional leaders.  This was most evident in set three (3) as they helped the team rally to victory.

Coach Dimitri Beauperthny and Captain Mills of St. Maarten ensured everyone showcased their skills on the field.  As a result most of the starters were rested.  The two further stated this was done to rest the main players and sharpen the skills of others.  Both were happy about the performance of the team but disappointed in giving away set three.

Team Captain Sabina Clement of the British Virgin Islands said a positive team spirit and momentum were the major factors which resulted in the British Virgin Islands winning set three of the game.  However once team spirit was absent, the effort and quality of play dissipated.  Coach Payne succinctly stated his views by saying the team that wanted the victory the most, is the one that fought for it.
