Dominican Republic sweep Canada
Lima, Peru, September 3, 2012 – Dominican Republic brushed aside
Canada in consecutive frames (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) in their
first match of Pool B in the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup at
Miguel Grau Coliseum on Monday.
The Dominicans held an overwhelming advantage of 40-18 in
attacks and committed 18 errors to 25 by the Canadians. The
winners outblocked their rivals 8-6 while the defeated side was
better in service aces 5-2.
Yonkaira Peña and Lisvel Eve registered 17 and 14 points
respectively as the top scorers of the winning side. Jeoselyna
Rodriguez contributed 8 points and Candida Arias added six.
Canada’s Royale Richardson and Sophie Carpentier each scored six
points.
“For most of my players this is their first international
experience and today we played against a very talented team like
Dominican Republic, very good physical with great jumping
ability,” Canada’s coach Ryan Hofer commented. “It is a learning
process for us.”
“I think we played a little bit below our best,” Dominican
Republic’s coach Marcos Kwiek said. “The change of weather has
affected some of us since we are coming from a very hot place.
Our goal for the next two matches is to continue winning and
minimize our errors.” |
