Peru gets its third victory and remains undefeated
TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico, September 23, 2010 - Peru won its
third match in a row in the Women’s Final Four Championship by
defeating Argentina 3 sets to 1 (26-28, 25-16, 25-14, 25-21).
This was a classic South American battle with a very tight first
set, won by Argentina, but the Peruvians combined their defense
and reception for a reaction in the second and kept the
momentum.
Jessenia Uceda, Karla Ortiz and Diana Soto each recorded 14
tallies as the top scorers for Peru, while Tanya Acosta finished
with 13 points and Aylin Pereyra added 10 for Argentina.
Argentina’s Emilce Sosa suffered a knee injury at the end of the
match and was under review.
“This was a great match for the audience, they really enjoyed
it, but we struggled like yesterday, especially at the time to
define in the critical moments”, said the Argentinean coach
Horacio Bastit.
For the captain Antonela Curatola, there also were some mistakes
they could not correct. “We failed in the service, and Peru got
big advantage to earn a victory in this tournament”, she stated.
Peru’s assistant coach, Edwin Jimenez said: “We have
successfully followed up our plan to reach our goal of making
the finals and winning the championship”.
“This will help us a lot in our preparation to the World
Championship. We know ourselves very good as a team and have
played very solid game, and as they (the Argentinans) said, the
real winners of this match were the fans”, the Peruvian captain
Leyla Chihuan concluded. |
