Men’s battle gets underway in Chula Vista
CHULA VISTA, USA, September 28, 2012

Men’s teams from Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic and the
United States went undefeated on Friday, the first day of pool
play at the 2012 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit event at the
U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
In Pool B, Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen of Mexico and
Yewddys Perez and German Recio of Dominican Republic set up a
showdown for their pool play match on Saturday, as each won both
their matches on Friday.
Ontiveros and Virgen defeated Costa Rica’s Marcelo Araya and
Jonathan Guevara, 2-0 (21-16, 21-12) and followed with a 2-0
(21-17, 21-16) victory over the USA5 team of Jesse Rambis and
Avery Drost.
Perez and Recio beat Rambis and Drost by forfeit and won against
Araya and Guevara, 2-0 (21-19, 21-19).
In Pool A, the Canada1 team of Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton
won their matches against the USA4 team of Adam Cabbage and
Parker Kalmbach, 2-0 (21-17, 24-22) and then beat Marc Lomeli
and Anthony Pippen of U.S. Virgin Islands, 2-0 (21-14, 21-13).
In Pool C, the USA3 team of Will Montgomery and Tri Bourne
defeated Guatemala’s Andy Leonardo and Erick Garrido, 2-0
(21-14, 21-15) and then beat Saint Lucia’s Julian Bissette and
Joseph Clercent, 2-0 (21-7, 21-17).
In Pool D, the USA2 team of Jeff Carlson and Tony Ciarelli beat
the Canada2 duo of Cameron Wheelan and Michael Plantinga, 2-0
(21-12, 21-18). Carlson and Ciarelli followed that with a 2-0
(21-10, 21-16) victory over Trinidad & Tobago’s Kevin Rivers and
Christian Francois, 2-0 (21-10, 21-16).
Pool play will continue on Saturday (Sept. 29) with the matches
starting at 9 a.m. Playoff matches will begin at 1 p.m. with the
final matches scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Semifinals and finals
are scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 30).
