Sands of Chula Vista to host NORCECA event
CHULA VISTA, USA, September 27, 2012 – The 2012 NORCECA Beach
Volleyball Circuit will visit Chula Vista, California for the
eighth stop of the continental tour, a double-gender event to
take place from September 28-20.
For the second time in three years the U.S. Olympic Training
Center in Chula Vista, California is hosting an event of the
NORCECA Circuit with the other one held in 2010.
The previous tournaments of this year took place in Cayman
Islands, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Mexico (2), Cuba and
Puerto Rico.
Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico,
Trinidad and Tobago Saint Lucia and hosts United States have
registered teams in both genders. El Salvador, U.S. Virgin
Islands and Turks and Caicos will compete only in the men’s
division.
Puerto Rico’s Roberto “Rafu” Rodriguez and Erick Haddock are one
of several multi-winners of 2012 taking part here. Rodriguez
combined with Haddock to win the Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico
events, but he also won in Guatemala and Dominican Republic
partnering with Pablo Guzman and Orlando Irizarry respectively.
In the women’s division, Puerto Rico’s Yarleen Santiago and
Yamileska Yantin triumphed in Dominican Republic and Puerto
Rico. Mexico’s Bibi Candelas, who claimed the titles in Cayman
Islands and at home in Toluca combining with Mayra Garcia, will
play here with Martha Revuelta.
Two years ago In Chula Vista, Santiago paired with Dariam
Acevedo to take the women’s title after a three-set battle
(21-19, 18-21, 15-13) over USA’s Tealle Hunkus and Heather Lowe
while the Mexican duo of Virgen and Also Miramontes defeated
Puerto Ricans Rodriguez and Irizarry 21-13, 24-22 to take home
the gold.
Competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday (Sept. 28) with pool
play. The final matches of the day are scheduled to begin at 4
p.m.
Pool play will continue on Saturday (Sept. 29) with the matches
starting at 9 a.m. Playoff matches will begin at 1 p.m. with the
final matches scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 30). The
semifinals will be played at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. The men’s bronze
medal match will start at 11:30 a.m. The women’s bronze medal
match will be at 12:30 p.m. The women’s gold medal match is
scheduled at 1:30 p.m. and the men’s gold medal match will serve
off at 2:30 p.m.
