Dominican Republic knock down Costa Rica

 

Lima, Peru, September 4, 2012 – Dominican Republic hammered Costa Rica 3-0 (25-6, 25-8, 25-17) to claim their second victory in as many outings in Pool B of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup. The defeated side fell to a 0-2 record.

 

The winners’ defense at the net produced an 8-1 advantage in blocks and they also had the same margin of 8-1 in serving aces. The Dominicans held an overwhelming gap of 36-10 in attacks.

 

Yonkaira Peña spearheaded the Dominicans with 14 points, followed by Gaila Gonzalez and Candida Arias with 9 and 7 points respectively.

 

“The match gave us the chance to play against some players with Olympic experience,” Costa Rica’s Mijal Hines said.

 

“The match served as a warm-up for tomorrow’s match against Peru,” Dominican Republic’s Niverka Marte said.

 

“The match gave me the chance to rotate players because I am going to need all them in our next match,” Dominican Republic’s coach the Brazilian Marcos Kwiek said.

 

“I would love to have more weapons to play at this level but we only have been together for four days,” Costa Rica’s Andres Carvajal said.
