Peru stay unbeaten at 2-0
Lima, Peru, September 4, 2012 – Peru defeated Canada in four
sets (25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22) for their second triumph in
two outings in the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on
Tuesday. Canada dropped to a 0-2 record in Pool B.
The home side took advantage of 40 unforced errors made by the
Canadians while making 26. The winners were better from the
service line 10-6 but the defeated side held a 17-7 margin in
the blocking category.
Angela Leyva led four Peruvians with double digits in the score
charts with 14 points. Ginna Lopez and Karla Ortiz tallied 11
apiece while Clarivet Yllescas added 10 points.
Canada’s Royale Richardson and Sophie Carpentier each finished
with 15 points while Amy Leschied and Alicia Perrin had 8 points
apiece.
“It was a good match because our coach is giving us confidence
to apply the new system he is implementing,” the 15 year-old
Peruvian Angela Leyva said. “We had good reception in the first
set but our blocking failed in the second. We got our reception
back in the third set.”
Kelci French, Captain of Canada, said they gave their best but
we didn’t play up to our best in the first set. “In the second
and third set we improved our reception,” she said.
“I am very glad with the girls because we played against a
Canada team that played great defense,” Peru’s coach Jose Dos
Santos said. “It is very important for us to play out game. So I
tell them when you can’t make a hard hit you have to play smart
ball.”
“I was surprised by the way our team bounced back after a subpar
first set,” Canada’s Ryan Hofer said. “We blocked very well in
the last two sets and enjoyed the support of the fans of the
match.” |
