Argentina win bronze medal
Lima, Peru, September 8, 2012 – Argentina won the bronze medal
of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup following their
four-set win (20-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-20) over hosts Peru in the
last match of Saturday at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima.
Lucia Fresco and Maria Calvete topped Argentina with 18 and 16
points while Tanya Acosta and Antonela Curatola added 8 and 7
tallies in the victory. Peru’s Raffaella Camet and Angela Leyva
finished with 13 and 11 points respectively.
It was a match plagued by errors from both sides as the winners
committed 27 mistakes to 35 by the defeated team. Argentina held
a 7-3 advantage in the blocking department and Peru was slightly
better in aces 8-7.
“The goal was to be among the top four and a bronze medal is
much better,” Argentina’s Horacio Bastit said. “Today my team
served well and had its best field defense of the tournament and
made it tough for the corner attackers of Peru.”
“Our serves were the key for us today,” Curatola said. “I am
very happy to have our country on the podium in this
competition.”
“Our reception and the attack, two key fundaments, didn’t work,”
Peru’s coach Jose Dos Santos said. “We didn’t have enough time
to prepare but I am satisfied with the result. We are receiving
the support to work and I hope in the new cycle to attain the
results I expect.” |
