Sponcil and Kelly Claes improved to a 2-0
win-loss record in Pool B of the FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Tour Finals after claiming a
2-0 (21-16, 21-16) over Sanne Keizer and
Madelein Meppelink of Netherlands on Thursday.
One day earlier, the American duo came back from
a set down against Swiss wild cards Anouk Verge-Depre
and Joana Heidrich to claim a 2-1 (19-21, 21-14,
15-11) victory.
April Ross and Alix Klineman also won both their
matches on Thursday to finish their Pool A
campaign on 2-2, but they have to wait to see
whether that will be enough for advancement,
depending on the last two pool games on Friday.
The Americans defeated Menegatti and Gottardi by
2-0 (21-17, 22-20) and Switzerland’s Nina
Betschart and Tanja Huberli by 2-0 (21-18,
21-17).
Meanwhile, Americans Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb
started off their campaign in the men’s field
with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) victory against
Latvia’s Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs in Pool
A, but then lost to Czechia’s Ondrej Perusic and
David Schweiner 2-0 (21-13, 21-16) on Wednesday.
Gibb and Crabb finished at 1-3 after losing
their two matches of Thursday, first to
Netherlands’ Steven van de Velde and Christiaan
Varenhorst 2-0 (26-24, 21-10) and then to
Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo 2-1
(21-11, 19-21, 15-13). |
