Sponcil and Claes undefeated at 2-0

CAGLIARI, Italy, October 7, 2021 - USA’s Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes improved to a 2-0 win-loss record in Pool B of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals after claiming a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) over Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink of Netherlands on Thursday.

One day earlier, the American duo came back from a set down against Swiss wild cards Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich to claim a 2-1 (19-21, 21-14, 15-11) victory.

April Ross and Alix Klineman also won both their matches on Thursday to finish their Pool A campaign on 2-2, but they have to wait to see whether that will be enough for advancement, depending on the last two pool games on Friday. The Americans defeated Menegatti and Gottardi by 2-0 (21-17, 22-20) and Switzerland’s Nina Betschart and Tanja Huberli by 2-0 (21-18, 21-17).

Meanwhile, Americans Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb started off their campaign in the men’s field with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) victory against Latvia’s Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs in Pool A, but then lost to Czechia’s Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner 2-0 (21-13, 21-16) on Wednesday.

Gibb and Crabb finished at 1-3 after losing their two matches of Thursday, first to Netherlands’ Steven van de Velde and Christiaan Varenhorst 2-0 (26-24, 21-10) and then to Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo 2-1 (21-11, 19-21, 15-13).
