PHILLIPSBURG, St. Maarten , July 23, 2015 - St. Lucia made light
work of British Virgin Islands (BVI) brushing them off in
straight sets (25 -8, 25- 10, and 25 -8) in the first game of
the ECVA Junior Female Championship.
The coach for the BVI, Willis Potter conceded that St. Lucia was
a notch above his team.
“I tip my hat to St. Lucia as they played a good game. But I was
encouraged by my team in defeat as they showed signs that they
can do even better. Obviously the girls were a bit nervous and
it was demonstrated in their play. The opponents came to the
tournament much more prepared than us and that is something that
we have noted”, he surmised.
St. Lucia’s Captain - Skye Faucher Mondesir was somewhat
disappointed despite the victory. “We have never underestimated
any team and so we were expecting a bit more competition. The
game was slow and hence we were a bit laid back. What I am
concerned about is that I think that we really needed to push
ourselves some more”, she admitted.
St. Lucia’s coach Florian Combie gave his own analysis of his
team’s victory. “We are working from the premise that youth
teams normally have many changes and hence one cannot be
complacent based on what happened in the last tournament. Our
service game was good, our reception was not what I would like
it to be and based on the opponents the blocking was not really
challenged. However a victory is a victory and we did it in such
a way and we took the opportunity to give the rookies a chance
to play” he noted.
The victors were led by joint leaders Nikita Greenidge (Middle
Blocker) and Kishel Noel (Outside Hitter) with 10 points each.
For the losing team Shanique Robinson mustered 4 points to lead
all scorers on her side. Team scores were mostly lopsided as
St. Lucia Lead in all categories; - 23 to 3 in Spikes; 30 to 6
Serves and 2-0 in Blocks. St. Lucia also accepted 34 points from
the opponent’s errors.
St. Lucia next game is against French St. Maarten in the three
team group. |
