ST JOHN’S, Antigua, May 8, 2016 – Team St. Lucia took home the
bronze medal when they defeated St. Eustatius 3-0 (25-16, 25-11
and 25-21) in the third place game of the ECVA Youth Female
Championship.
Based on the form of the tournament, the victory was hardly a
surprise as St. Eustatius had succumbed to their inexperience on
previous occasions and this game was not different.
The scoresheet showed that 75 % of the points that St. Lucia got
was from opponents’ errors. Consequently the Lucians were not
given a chance to score heavily. In fact St. Lucia’s Aryel
Leonard playing as an outside hitter got 6 points which was a
game high.
St. Lucia edged St. Eustatius in scoring points from kills 9-8.
The blocks were scant but the scoreboard showed a 2-1 advantage
to St. Lucia while the Lucians poured in 8 service aces to St.
Eustatius 5.
Samantha Reid of St. Lucia was not exactly a happy camper after
the game. “A coach is hardly ever happy with third place but the
overall experience has taught us a lot and we are really happy
that we could have come to this tournament and express our
talents. We know what we have to work on and we will do just
that upon our return”, she revealed.
Her opposite number in Suyne Robins underscored the point she
made earlier about youth volleyball in St. Eustatius. “We have
to get in the trenches and do the work on all fronts if we are
to get to a level to even compete at these types of
competition,” she said. |
