ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, May 7, 2016 – St. Lucia had little to no
problems in brushing aside St. Eustatius in straight sets
(25-11, 25-12 and 25-18) in the opening encounter of the ECVA
Female Youth competition.
Coach Samantha Reid appeared quite satisfied at the postgame
interview.
“It is always good to win the first game especially in
tournaments like these so that we could be well positioned to
play in the finals. The games were a bit easier than expected
especially in the first two sets when the girls executed
according to play however in the third set we tried to make some
changes which did not work out ideally” she reported.
Despite the loss coach Suyne Robin of St. Eustatius was all
smiles.
“I am happy because we think that our team gave a good account
of themselves for a debut tournament. They were quite nervous at
first and with St. Lucia playing consistently they got a bit
frustrated. However we have seen some positives in the loss and
we have walked away knowing that we have something that we can
work with”, she said.
The scoreboard supported Robin’s account as her team gave up a
whopping 44 points in errors whereas St. Lucia committed 27. St.
Lucia led in all scoring categories 9-8 in Spikes, 4-0 in Blocks
and 18 to 6 on Serve.
On an individual levels Lucia’s Middle Blocker Aryel Leonard led
all scorers with 17 points made up of 4 spikes, 3 blocks and
10 service aces. No one else in the game had double figures.
Team St. Eustatius was led by Millenia Benette with 4 points.
St. Eustatius will tangle with St. Martin in the evening‘s first
game while Antigua/Barbuda is booked to meet St. Lucia. |
