St. Lucia hangs on to defeat St. Vincent for 3rd place

PHILLIPSBURG, St. Maarten, July 26, 2015 –  Defending champs St. Lucia managed to find enough reserves in the tank to push aside  St. Vincent and the Grenadines and  defeated them 3-1 ( 25-17,25-23, 20-25 and 26-24). In doing so they claimed a consolation 3rd place in the ECVA Junior Female Championship.

St. Vincent and Grenadines pushed the St. Lucians to their limit almost causing a 5th set as St. Lucia had to make up a sizeable deficit before edging them at the end to secure victory.

St. Lucia offence was distributed right across the team sheet as 8 of the nine players contributed at least a point. Outside Hitters Kishel Noel and Tessianna Norlay both recorded 9 to be the joint scoring leaders.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Captain Jolecia Olivere had 10 points to lead from in front and got support from Nhaga Barker with 8 points.

On team level St. Lucia enjoy a 25-19 advantage in Spikes and grabbed 14 points to St. Vincent 10 from the service line. St. Lucia also led in Blocks 4-2.

Winning Coach Florian Combie was distraught and at a loss for words. “This can easily be classed as one of the worse performances that I‘ve seen from a St. Lucian team under my tutelage. There is absolutely no reason for them to be playing so badly. I was really not impressed”, he averred.

On the other hand losing coach Cassius Franklyn was generally pleased. “It was heartening to see how my girls stepped up and pushed St. Lucia to the very brink. Unfortunately, we lost some focus particularly in finishing the sets and they were able to get the victory”, he explained.
