PHILLIPSBURG, St. Maarten, July 26, 2015 – The stadium shook
beneath the stomping and screaming home fans at every single
point contested for the third place playoff game between St.
Maarten and Dominica in the ECVA Junior Male Championship. When
the dust settled St. Maarten was the winner in straight sets
(25-20, 25-21 and 25 12) and the home fans were obviously
extremely happy.
Shiovanni Levenston playing opposite hitter was head and
shoulders above all else as the top scorer for the game. He
recorded 18 points made up of 9 Kills, 2 Blocks and 7 points
from the service line. His support cast came in the form of
Juwon Hans and Derrick Tidort with 9 points each.
Losers Dominica had Tamir Lawrence with 7 points but no one else
had contributions of note.
On the overall team level, St. Maarten bossed the score sheet
with a wide margin in kills – 23 to 10 and an equally fair size
lead in service points 14 to3. Added to that, they had 5 blocks
to Dominica’s 3.
Coach Raymond Jacobs exuded confidence before and after the
game.” I told you we would do it. I have assessed these teams
and I realised that based on my teams capability we are just a
level above them. I was happy that it occurred before our home
fans and I know that they are really pleased right now”, he
beamed.
Ray Robinson was obviously very disappointed. “The talent is
there but it needs more nurturing and developing. I think our
guys need more tournament preparation and exposure to
competition of this nature. It is clear that the atmosphere
affected them and as a result we did not bring our best game. It
also appeared to me that he St. Maarten team wanted it more”, he
intimated. |
