St. Martin cops female title over Antigua and Barbuda

 

   

PHILLIPSBURG, St. Maarten, July 26, 2015- Spurred on by about 100 partisan spectators St. Martin completely dominated play against Antigua and Barbuda in the finals of the ECVA Junior Female Volleyball championship. The match lasted 1 hour 18 minutes and St. Martin won in straight sets (25-22, 25-17 and 25 13.

 

The domination by St. Martin came as a result of superiority on the team scoresheet. In spikes St. Martin poured in 20 to Antigua and Barbuda’s 12. St. Martin got two blocks while Antigua/Barbuda nil and St. Martin held the advantage in points from the service line -13 to 9.

 

Joy Birarda playing as an outside hitter had the most points among all scorers with 10 while Lauriane Ternon gave support by contributing 8 points to the winning cause.

 

For the losers the highest scorer was Alexis- Ann Tomilson with 6. No other player had contributions worthy of note.

 

Coach Jean-Luc Lezin was still in celebratory mode. I am very happy and very please. The girls really deserve their 1st ever victory at this level it could have been even better had it not been for the nervousness they were going through. However they really worked hard for about 1 year until this time and now the plans have come true. I am just so happy for them”, he said.

 

Coach Vanessa Burke of Antigua was gracious in defeat. “Congratulations are in order for the winning team but I am proud of how my girls played tonight. They went through some tension and nervousness  but we kept reminding them to relax and have fun. We quite enjoyed the competition and we certainly wanted to give more of a fight but that was not to be”, she concluded.

 

The final positions therefore in the Junior Female Competition are as follows: 1. St. Martin, 2. Antigua Barbuda, 3. St. Lucia, 4, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 5. St. Maarten, 6. British Virgin Islands.
