ST JOHN’S, Antigua, May 8, 2016 – St. Martin came back from a
set down and rallied to win a thrilling 5 set match (18-25,
25-9, 25-14, 22-25 and 15-2) over St. Lucia in the penultimate
match of Round Robin competition of the ECVA Youth Female
Competition
A thunderous spike from St. Martin’s Middle Blocker Amanda
Sylves with the score on 14-2 in the 5th fell into
the back court an out of the reach of the St. Lucian defense.
The St. Lucia team was stunned as they came to the realization
that they were out of the finals.
Indeed Sylves poured in a Herculean effort and literally carried
St. Martin with 28 points a game high tally. She contributed in
every category with 14 spikes, 9 service points and 5 important
blocks
On the opposite side, Middle Blocker Aryel Leonard led her team
with 11 points in a losing cause.
Jean Luc Lizan of St. Martin felt that he was a bit lucky in
attaining victory. “We were able to focus much more on the basic
tenants of the game. We were forced to do some things
differently because of injury and they worked,” he admitted.
His captain Mailee Ehrmann was ecstatic. “Right now the girls
are extremely happy we are going to rest up and come back
focused to win the final,” she said.
Samantha Reid coach of St. Lucia was not disheartened despite
the defeat. I am very proud of my girls as they showed a true
fighting spirit. The way we came back and took the fourth set
and after trailing by 8 in the fifth set to come back like that
are commendable. I can’t fault them at all for the effort they
poured in only this time around we were on the losing end,” she
recounted.
The scoreboard reflected a balance of power for team St. Martin.
In Spikes St. Martin held a huge advantage 33-18 and in Service
Points St. Martin again dominated 10-5. Only in the Blocking
category that St. Lucia held a slender lead 8-6.
This result confirmed that it will be a St. Martin versus
Antigua/Barbuda final while St. Lucia will meet St. Eustatius
for the bronze. |
