St. Martin vs. St. Maarten: Civil war
MARIGOT, St. Martin, August 27, 2016 - “No team gave a quarter
nor was any taken”, as the much anticipated civil war, resulted
in a 16-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-19 victory for French St. Martin.
With both teams very nervous in set one, it produced many
unforced errors, which filtered through the entire game.
Realizing the importance of the game, Rotilio Richardson took
the team on his shoulders and scored twenty one points. Captain
Paul Quellery was the team’s second highest scorer but the
loudest cheer leader.
St. Maarten fought valiantly, but it could not stem the course
of the tide. Captain Jeffers led the way by scoring eleven
points and tried rallying his men in moral and with good
passes. He was ably assisted by Riegmar Valies (18 points), who
provided much needed fire power but it was insufficient.
Despite the loss one could see an improvement in team passing
and communication in the young team.
Coach Thierry Stephens was not worried about his team’s first
set lost. He made a few changes which produced the desired
result. Coach Thierry was highly complementary of his
opposition, noting they have a young team and young coaching
staff. He encouraged them to remain focused and execute their
game plan.
Team Captain Paul Quellery, said he was aware of the Coach’s
game plan and worked with it. He was not worried about errors
made, as he is of the view, unity makes for a more powerful
team. Like his coach, Captain Quellery spoke highly of the
opposition and encouraged then to continue working hard.
St. Maarten’s coach Demitri Beauperthuy was full of praise for
his young charges. He felt they played well but fatigue played
a role in the unforced errors committed. He was fully confident
they will be ready for tomorrow’s game.
Captain Jeffers knew the game was going to be tough but
indicated the initial goal was to win at least two sets. He
further lamented all errors will be corrected in time for
Sunday’s match. |
