St. Vincent and the Grenadines Hands BVI a second defeat
LA BORIE, Grenada, November 2, 2018 – St. Vincent
and the Grenadines tested their readiness as one of the
pretournament favourites with a straight set victory (25-17,
25-17 and 25-23) over BVI in Match number 4 of the ECVA Men’s
championship.
Team BVI proved worthy opponents as the game was by no means a
walk in the park particularly the third where St. Vincent was
forced to overcome a 4 point lead at the very end.
St. Vincent’s Opposite in Travis Cumberbatch led all scorers
with 14 points with 11 of those being Spikes. He was ably
assisted by Daryl Franklyn who had 13 points with 9 spikes
included.
For the losing side Canise Maquis was the top scorer with 7
points.
Both teams were guilty of many unforced errors St. Vincent and
the Grenadines 33 and BVI 35 but St. Vincent ruled the other
scoring categories. In Spikes it was 27 to 17; Blocks 8 to 3 and
service points 7 to 2
BVI. “It was a much better performance than yesterday but still
we came up short as our defense let us down at crucial stages.
It was also a case where the more senior guys did not answer to
the challenge and that cost us dearly”, Coach Payne surmised.
Coach Eardley Martin of St. Vincent and the Grenadines was all
smiles. It was a bit more difficult than we expected as the BVI
did not just roll over and die. We had to take the game to them.
For our first outing I am satisfied as I am sure as we improve
as we go along. I have seen the other team and based on the
results today we are in good stead. We will go home now get some
much needed rest and get prepared for our encounter with the
home team” he said
St.Vincent and the Grenadines next tangles with Grenada for
leadership in group B while BVI awaits the crisscross
quarterfinals. |
