PHILLIPSBURG, St. Maarten, July 24th, 2015 - All in keeping with
their intention to win this Junior Tournament, St. Vincent and
the Grenadines (SVG) easily disposed of Antigua and Barbuda in
straight sets (25-17, 25-15 and 25-19) in their second match of
Pool B action in the ECVA Junior Male Championship.
Due to the fact that it is a three team pool, SVG earned the
right to play in the final of the ECVA Junior Male competition
against the winner of Pool A as they have won both of their
games so far.
Team SVG bossed the team scoring board with a 39- 24 advantage
in spiking. A sizeable lead in blocks 6-1 and the 8 service
points that were poured in by SVG were met with a zero response.
Middle Blocker for team SVG was the highest contributor on the
night with 15 points while he got good support from Ronaldo
Franklyn (outside hitter) with 11 points. For Team Antigua Amoy
Lee mustered 7 points mostly from kills in an effort to resist.
Coach Vance Andrew cracked a half smile at the end of the game.
“We reviewed our last game and we came out determined to show
improvement in the service and defense areas and they both
worked for us in this game. Now we are on course with our plans
for championship and I would like to commend all the players but
especially the Asmond Franklyn and Marcus Thomas who literally
controlled things in offence and defense respectively and the
setter who ran the plays during the game. I believe the
opponents tried their best but they just couldn’t get the upper
hand on us”, he said.
Antiguan coach Olsen Joseph was shell shocked. “This is a shadow
of a team that I know he quipped. They appeared to be timid, shy
and nervous or combinations of all three. Having said that I
must note that it was their first game in an overseas
competitive setting so we have to learn for this and come out
swinging from ball one in order to redeem ourselves by at least
playing for the third place level”, he said.
Antigua next plays St. Maarten while SVG awaits an opponent for
the final. |
