St. Vincent records first win in ECVA Junior tournament

ST JOHNS,  Antigua, August 30, 2019-  St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Team SVG) defeated St. Kitts & Nevis in straight sets (25-12, 25-13, 25-20) to record their first victory in regular pool play after going down to St. Lucia in the first game.

Team SVG hardly broke a sweat as the new comers struggled to compete apart from the 3rd game where St. Kitts/Nevis led for brief periods.

Coach of the St. Kitts & Nevis team Shawn Seabrooks was not swayed by his second straight loss. ”We know our situation is not all about winning instead we have set incremental targets for the guys to improve and to be honest I am seeing these improvements. For example we spoke about reducing the service errors and we did so by more than 50 %. Moreover I am happy the way we competed in the 3rd set and I am now looking forward for them to be even more competitive in our final pool game later today”, he said.

Coach Vance Andrews wore a smile for the first time in two days. “I am satisfied with the win especially since things seemed to have come together for my team today. The setter had a good game and he gave the Outside Hitters some great opportunities and they executed. This was our key to this particular victory”, he concluded.

Captain Jamaar Cropper had similar views. “After that heart breaking loss to St. Lucia we targeted St. Kitts/Nevis to get us back on track. And so the guys went out there and did the job setting us up for the next big game Antigua”, he said.

Team SVG led in all scoring categories – 11 to 8 in Spikes, 9 to 2 in Blocks and 7 to 4 in Service Points. For the winners Setter Jamaar Cropper took the opportunity to hit as well and came up with 9 Spikes. He also recorded 5 blocks and contributed a total of 15 points to be the highest scorer in the game. The two Outside Hitters contributed 19 points between them – Enrico Louraine 11 and Kyle Liverpool 8.

The St. Kitts/Nevis team had outside hitter Zedan Clarke with 9 points as the team leader. No one else got close.

St. Kitts/Nevis next game is against St. Lucia while the much anticipated clash between Antigua/Barbuda and Team SVG will bring down the curtains on pool play later this evening.
