LUCERNE, Switzerland, May 18, 2015 –
Canada’s Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas swept Austria’s
Stefanie Schwaiger and Barbara Hansel 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) in the
bronze medal game at the inaugural Lucerne Open on Sunday. This
medal is the team’s second in as many tournaments.
Broder and Valjas, Fuzhou Open gold medalists late last month,
recovered nicely after their first defeat in 12 consecutive
victories of this year's FIVB World Tour in the semi-finals.
"This second medal within 14 days proves that the win at Fuzhou
wasn’t just a lucky strike. Now we want to hunt our next medal
at the Prague Open next week," Kristina Valjas said.
Broder also sees their second consecutive medal in this year’s
FIVB World Tour as an important step in the right direction.
“We are so excited to come away with bronze here in Lucerne!
Coming off of our win in China we knew that teams would have us
on their radar, and our play needed to be strong. I'm so proud
of our execution at crucial times during the tournament, and our
composure under pressure. Our teamwork and belief kept us
fighting for every point, and we are looking forward to a
successful season ahead," said Broder.
Germany’s Karla Borger and Britta Buthe captured the fold medal
by besting Madelein Meppelink and Marleen Van Iersel of The
Netherlands 2-1 (16-21, 21-16, 15-13). |
